Raphael Israeli

Raphael Israeli

Born in Fez, Morocco, Raphael Israeli , the author of eighteen books on the Middle East and Islam, immigrated to Israel at the age of 14. He served in the Israeli Armed Forces as a career intelligence officer until 1968, when he left with the rank of Major. Among his various academic achievements are a degree in Arabic and History from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, he became a fellow of the Center of Chinese Studies at the University of California at Berkeley, which was followed by a M.A. degree on East Asian History from the same university. Thereafter, Raphael Israeli studied Chinese at the Stanford Center, at Taiwan University in Taipei. Israeli was also fellow of the Center of International Studies, the University of California at Berkeley, and a Lady Davis Fellow at Hebrew University.

Israeli also has a Ph Degree in Chinese and Islamic History from the University of California, Berkeley. In the year 2000, he was Principal Fellow in Chinese Regional Cultures (Funded he Chiang Ching Kuo Foundation) at the Melbourne Institute of Asian Languages and Societies. He was lecturer and then Professor of Chinese History and Islamic Civilization, the Hebrew University, Jerusalem. Professor Israeli has been the coordinator of the Asia Research Unit at the Harry S. Truman Research Institute for the Advancement of Peace, Hebrew University, Jerusalem. Later on, he became Director of the Center for Pre-Academic Studies, Hebrew University, as well as a Fellow at the Truman Research Institute, thereafter becoming a Visiting Professor at Semester-at-Sea, University of Pittsburgh, in Middle Eastern and Chinese Studies.

After being a visiting Professor at York University, Toronto, in Middle Eastern and Chinese History, he was later on a visiting Scholar at the Centers of the Study of World Religions and Middle Eastern Studies, and Associate in Research at the Fairbank Center for East Asian Research, all at Harvard University, Cambridge, Mas.

In the Summer of 1986 he was visiting Professor in Middle Eastern Studies for the Summer Session in the Center of Internatioal Relations and the University Professors Program, Boston University, Boston. In the Fall of 1988, he was a Fellow, Rockefeller Foundation's Bellagio Study Center, Bellagio, Italy.

Professor Israeli became the Chairman of the Department of East Asian Studies, Hebrew University, Jerusalem.

He has also been a visiting Fellow at the Center for Chinese Studies, School of Pacific Studies, Australian National University, Canberra, Australia, and a Visiting Professor at Naruto University of Education, Naruto, Japan.

Later on he has also been Professor at the Unit of International Relations at the Law School, Gent University, Belgium.

Among others, he has also been Principal Fellow in Chinese Regional Cultures, Melbourne Institute of Asian Langauges and Societies, Melbourne University. In the Winter and Spring 2003, he was Visiting Professor at the History Department of Wesleyan University, CT.

In addition he has taught courses for overseas students at Hebrew University and he has also traveled on lecture tours to major universities in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Japan and other Asian countries.

Raphael Israeli is fluent in Hebrew, English, French, Arabic and Chinese. His most recent books are:
