Stanley H. Kaplan

Stanley H. Kaplan invented a new industry -- preparation for standardized tests. He started as a tutor while a student at James Madison H.S. in Brooklyn and at the College of the City of New York. He built the Stanley H. Kaplan Educational Center into the world's leading institution to prepare students for standardized entrance exams including the SAT, ACT, MCAT, LSAT, GRE, GMAT and DAT. Other programs were later introduced to prepare for licensure exams in the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, accounting, and teaching.

Over the years, Kaplan test-prep programs have touched the lives of more than 3 million students. There are now more than 1,000 Kaplan locations throughout the United States and in twenty five international locations including centers in the Far East, the Middle East and Western Europe. Today the company, now known as Kaplan Inc., is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Washington Post Company. Mr. Kaplan retains the title of Chairman. In addition to live programs, Kaplan Inc. delivers its services through books, software, videos, and the Internet. One program is a virtual law school known as Concord Law School. Recently Kaplan acquired SCORE, a K-12 learning program, which includes a one-on-one tutoring business. What goes around comes around!

Mr. Kaplan has appeared on hundreds of radio and television programs discussing the problems that face our schools and the controversial issues surrounding test-preparation. In 1979, after four years of study, the Federal Trade Commission ruled that test scores could be improved significantly through preparation. This also ended, once and for all, the secrecy surrounding standardized testing by the College Board and the Educational Testing Service.

Today, Mr. Kaplan is president of the Rita J. and Stanley H. Kaplan Family Foundation which provides funding for many causes including health care, arts, education, and Jewish programs.

Mr. Kaplan is the author of his autobiography Stanley H. Kaplan Test Pilot: How I Broke the Testing Barriers for Millions of Students and Caused a Sonic Boom in the Business of Education. Published under the Simon & Schuster label, the book is available in stores now.

Mr. Kaplan lives in Manhattan with his wife Rita and also spends some fun time in homes in Pennsylvania and in Florida. He is a seasoned traveler, Hi Fi enthusiast, avid photographer and plays at golf and tennis. He and his wife have raised three children and have three grandchildren.
